Soldiering is a dangerous profession, invariably underpaid but generously rewarded by the courage and constancy of one’s comrades. Despite the political rhetoric, soldiers do not fight for some high-flown cause, however flamboyantly expressed, or for someone to gain a seat at a political top table; they fight for their friends of “Bravo” Company.
Dependence on the man beside you in the slit trench, on those giving covering fire as you cross open ground, on the sappers lifting the mines, the gunners getting their shells on target on time and the pilots suppressing the enemy you cannot see or reach, is key to success; but dependence on those dealing with the insidious threat of the improvised explosive device (IEDs) is of an even higher order.
It is a threat new only in its form; the land mines and delayed-action bombs dropped on Britain in the early years of the Second World War called for experts from all three Armed Services to defuse or detonate them. Like the bomb disposal specialists of today, they faced the constantly changing and increasing risks of new antihandling devices; there is never certainty, only cold courage and calculation. It is work that humbles the bravest of the brave.
Staff-Sergeant Olaf Schmid was such a man and was acknowledged to be an expert among experts, at the peak of his skills with a record of spectacular but quiet success. He was killed instantly in the town of Sangin, Afghanistan, while disarming an IED which, it must be assumed, was fitted with an anti-handling mechanism of a new complexity or a secondary control system to be triggered after the device’s discovery.
Men like Schmid, trained and experienced to the highest level, are the defensive line against IEDs; there is no tactic or strategy to prevent their use, just as there is no sure way to defeat the suicide bombers apart from ending their motivation.
Olav, known as “Oz” to his comrades and friends, was born in Truro, Cornwall, of a German mother, Barbara, and a Swiss father, Hans Schmid, who died some years ago. He joined the Royal Logistic Corps in 1996 and shortly afterwards applied to train as an ammunition and bomb disposal specialist.
The selection for this discipline is exceptionally rigorous, calling not only for an analytical mind but also a calm and philosophical disposition. Schmid qualified on all counts and was promoted to the rank of staffsergeant in 2008.
He had served previously in Northern Ireland, Yugoslavia and Kosovo and recently with the Logistic Regiment of 3 Commando Brigade, Royal Marines. The spirit and fitness ethos of the Commando Brigade matched his own attitude to perfection. He studied every new aspect of his demanding speciality and, following further intensive training, qualified as a “High Threat” operator, the pinnacle of bomb disposal achievement. Work with Special Forces, supervising the work of other experts and instructing police tactical firearms teams was opened up to him.
Schmid arrived in Afghanistan in June 2009 and was immediately involved in the hazardous Operation Panchai Palang (Panther’s Claw), in the southern Helmand province, designed to extend the area of control and offer a greater element of local security to the population in preparation for the Afghanistan national elections, challenged by the Taleban.
Thanks to the now-acknowledged shortage of troop-lift helicopters, this extensive troop deployment had, of necessity, to be by vehicle, using routes known to be sown with IEDs. Dealing with this threat was the challenge faced by Oz Schmid and his team. Working with the 2nd Rifles Battle group, he rendered safe 64 IEDs to allow its deployment on operations with some degree of safety.
Humorous, tousle-haired, smiling and informal, Schmid was received by the soldiers whose safety was in his hands with the camaraderie only those who have served together in danger can comprehend. Banter, black humour when an IED is found or suspected, then tense silence until all is declared clear.
Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Thomson, commanding 2nd Rifles Battle Group, has said: “Staff-Sergeant Oz Schmid was simply the bravest and most courageous man I have ever met. Under relentless IED and small arms attacks he stood taller than the tallest. He opened the ‘Pharmacy’ road for the battle group to use and 24 hours later found and disarmed 31 IEDs on route ‘Sparta’.
“He saved lives in 2nd Rifles time after time and he will retain a very special place in the heart of every Rifleman in our extraordinary battle group. Superlatives do not do this man justice. Better than the best of the best. Our thoughts and prayers are with his beloved family.”
On the day following his death, Staff-Sergeant Schmid was due to fly home for two weeks’ rest and recuperation in England, after a five-month tour of duty in Helmand province to which he was expected to return later this month.
In an statement of almost overwhelming compassion, his mother said of the loss of her 30-year-old elder son: “I hope his work will be a contribution to making Afghanistan a safer place for British troops and the Afghan people.”
Truro Cathedral is to host a service of remembrance for the man who was once its head chorister. His funeral will be held in the Winchester area where he lived with his family.
He is survived by a younger brother, his wife Christina and stepson Laird. On hearing of her husband’s death, his wife said: “Oz was a phenomenal husband and loving father. He exuded confidence and professionalism but was self-effacing and modest, always ready to make fun of himself. He will be impossible to forget.”

The other day I was walking Balmes Street up and I had this man in front of me. My imagination started to fly about possible things that I could do with it.Take one and throw it away. Take one and destroy it in his head and run, then the rest will fall down too. Touch him on the arm to see if he turns. Tell him that there is one broken and all his back is dirty. Little touch at the bottom of the whole thing and it will fall down. Too many options and so little time to decide.... I took a picture to calm my dark side from acting.

Nice image of our beloved friends when they came to earth to promote the film. The movie was having a tremendous succes over the galaxy and decided to come here to earth. As we can see from their customes they got the fashion a little bit 70's but this is because of the delay of tv signals and radio signals that get to them. That is the best they got.
The movie was a succes also in this planet and they made some other films, the first three were GOOD really good. But the newer ones didn´t got what they spect and stopped doing the film saga.
Who knows if they ever come back. We were really pleased to have them with us during that visit. I didn´t know Darth Vader was wear glasses, maybe is the atmosfear of the earth.

Yo quiero un iphone pero vale pasta y no soy de movistar. Asi que un dia cuando pueda me comprare uno. Esperemos que no sea como el de la foto. A ver si tenemos suerte dinero tiempo y salud para disfrutarlo.

Tambien hay muchas aplicaciones para el iphone pero son de pago creo, asi que el pirateo va que vuela. La mayoria de aplicaciones son para perder el tiempo, por lo que he visto, y convierte al telefono en una consola de videojuegos en vez de un telefono. Pero no importa, a mi me encanta, el diseño, que sea apple, que sea chulo y para perder el tiempo.

Si alguien tiene experiencia en el iphone que me envie informacion sobre aplicaciones utiles y como funciona en su uso diario. Es fragil? se rompe? yo soy muy bestia y un movil me dura un año, no mas. A ver como sale este.

FC Barcelona

Ja,ja, I have to publish this one. That was during summer, an open day at FC Barcelona. I went with my father and we spend the day going up and down the whole stadium and activities. We also had to vote for some inside things inside the club, we voted oposite, one yes and the other one no. ja,ja. We had really good fun and enjoyed that day. You could go through the whole place, field included, museum, etc... Good stuff.

I took this picture during the summer in Galicia. I don't think I posted any of them. It was a international surf competition in that small town with tremendous waves.

Police told the norht country to not go to the sea that day, but this guys jumped in and start to dance on top of 5 meter waves again and again. A tremendous show that I really enjoyed and I want to see more of that. Especially if I am on the beach with my camera taking pictures and not moving at all. Next time I will bring my fridge. Experience is a point. Good stuff surfing around.

El Mini de Guillem

One of my best friends, who lives in Almeria, south of Spain, has a Mini. The especial thing about it is that he rebuilt it piece a piece until he got the result of the picture.

He spend a year or more in the project. He bough a second or third hand old mini. From there he started to look for parts. Discovering the incredible amount of people doing the same and selling parts through Ebay and other methods. After all the work... a supercool Mini.

I sneak into the car and looks super old but new because all the inside has been taken care extremely well. All details and corners are clear and look new.

Now, he is about to finish it. What is he gonna do? I told him to sell it and make another one. Or he must start thinking about getting a bigger house with a bigger garage.

It is nice to see that with hard work things happen. Good stuff Guillem.

What things did I improve this year?
-I lost 10 kilos.
-I am closer to my family issues.
-I love more the people that I already was loving
-Improving my working style and moving through management, that is a nightmare laberynth.
-Barcelona Futbol team is leader in First division and playing great.
-I control my expenses and incoming money.
-I fix my teth.
-I am eating better.... sometimes. XD

What should I improve?
-Loose more weight.
-Go to BDP.
-Go to frisbee practice more often than now, that will be easy.
-Work better organizing my information at work.
-Pay the fix of my teth.
-Save money I want to save during a tough year.
-Eat even better.
-Support my family.
-Have a couple of babies.
-Get married, with a huge party.
-Quit smoking?
-Win a fucking huge lottery.
-Discover something that will fix something that all chinese people of the world need to use everyday at least once. They can build it for half a euro and I will sell it for one euro. The bussiness needs to work at least for a couple of weeks. ThenI sell it. Joking.
-Be better on listening people that want to help me.
-Win a couple of futbol championships with Barcelona team. And be on the field to enjoy it.
-Go with my father to a USAP (Perpignan rugby team) team to the stadium.
-Have all my family with good health.

Rugby weekend

The weekend of 12th of december we went to France to follow three rugby games in three days. The trip was Castres, Montauban, Perpignan. Three games:Castres-Leinster, Montauban-Sharks, USAP-Leicester.
We started on friday facing a four hour drive that went perfect, getting to the stadium 30 min before the game. With time to say hi to our friends Brian, Maira, Shean and Barri. Also with time to fill ourselves with some beers. The stadium was full and you can stay next to the field. Midsize stadium. Castres-Leinster. Obviously we stayed there next to the field watching the game and trying to beat the cold with fresh beers.

Tough game that Castres won. Nice.
We went to sleep in a hotel in a small town that I don't remember the name. Mainly because we were in Castres in a Irish pub drinking until they send us out. The wakeup next morning was nice and creepy, the hotel was ...old but efficient let's say. jaja. Ready to travel again.
Montauban was the next stop. 7 pm the game, get into the hotel and walkaround then whole day. We had our first hot meal with our ass on a chair. Nice and small town. The game was from seats far away but we were under cover in a rainy day. Montauban-Sharks. The locals won again. We had the chance to see Chaval, what a beast. The night went cold and rainy but the hot greasy sausage sandwich outside the stadium save our lives.
After that , crisis, we walk around the city to find a bar to watch the Barcelona-Madrid football game. That my team Barcelona won, jaja!! What a weekend!!!
Next day, two hours drive south until perpignan. USAP-Leicester.
GReat stadium, big, there is a Macdonlads next door. Cool shop. Great ambience and atmosphere. We got seats next to the big noisy crowd, and we loved that.
It was a tremendous game that was the debut of Dan Carter, named the best player in the world, ok you name it. The top picture is nthe first conversion of Carter with the Perpignan tema. USAP played great and also Leicester, 23-20 at the end, and we all ended up happy and smiling. Some after game beers. Chill out on the stadium. We found a door open to the field and we stept in and started playing and running around the field. Nobody was yelling at us with the typical, hey get out of here. No. Totally oposite, they asked us to take picture to us and had some laughthing. Fantastic and totally recommend that kind of trip. I will go back to Perpignan, basically it is 30m in away from my parents house. jaja. Good stuf. Looking forward to repeat a rugby weekend in France.

Mare de deu del mont

We went up to "la Mare de deu del mont" with Brian, Maire and Cristina. Up to the top from aprox the middle of the mountain. Nice walk and view, not really hard. Nice bar with fresh beer on the top.
And the best part is going back home and have a fideua waiting for you. ummm. The mountain is around 800m high. I know is nothing and some people from high mountain countries are laughthing about it, Cristina does. But I guess no english person will make jokes about high mountains.
Noce walk next to Mas jonquer. 1h30min going up, 40min going down, always from font de Falgas, middle of the mountain.

In the Canary Islands we went to MasPalomas and we took the camels. Yes I know it is touristic stuff, but I love it. And we all enjoyed these moments with the camels. Then we walked through the desert with naked man sunbathing. And found a bar on the beach with fresh beer. What else? Paradise, and we were there.

I am not updating my blog. Sorry. Let's see what I can do, because it is only lazyness, I have plenty of time to do it.
Ok, life is ok in BCN. We had the porro open a month ago and it was a fantastic succes. It was great to organize all the show for a year and at the end all goes fine.
We had friends coming in and out the house during that time. Because of that Cristina and I decided to smoke outside... well she like it and we are still only smoking in the gallery outside. s$%&t. But it is good, I smoke less now.
Other things... we have internet in Figueres, that was the big news of the week. Yes, in our remote house up north isolated, finally got inet. That means, I could work from there....ummmmm.
Oh, also in Spain we are always make fun of everything, for sure you remember this one:

But the biggest baby we have around is sili who ended up third on the European ultimate frisbee championships. Check sili's blog. He was playing with switzerland and was lucky that Spain was not playing at this tournament.

Louise Spichtig Wuille

When a friend of you have a soon or a doughter, we know that eventually we are gonna be exposed to that kind of material. je,je.
Femke and Flo had a baby recently, it's a boy. Called Louise, like the famous piano man in Casablanca who had a son who went to the moon and won five tours.
This is when Louise start his carreer as a son. He is gonna be cool because with these two parents you can only be cool. I have the same issue.
I hope I can meet him soon and have some beers with the parents to talk about all the good things you are doing.
Take care of your parents and send presents always to the friends, especially the ones in Spain.

Good stuff Louise, you almost have all the vowels in your name.

Summer in Catalunya

All the summer there are parties in the small towns in Catalunya. Every small town has the concert and other stuff, good stuff. Close dancing, classic, rock, a bar behind... What else you can ask for.

My oncle who lives in Toro and recently got married (check older posts) was at home spending some holidays. We remembered together the classic stuff and go dancing in a concert in the plaza of a small town called Navata, where all our family is from. It was funny. I love these parties in the summer. Good stuff.

Festes Anyos 2007

Two weeks ago it was the party of a small town in Andorra called Anyos, where Cristina is one of the organizers with his brother and friends. Here is what you have.

First a big fireworks, tracas on next to the church to let know all the valley that the party is started.

Then Anyos organizes a trial competition around the town, because the town is in the middle of the mountains it is easy. And funny.

Then we organize a big dinner with the people in town .

Then everybody parties until 7 AM non stop. Two live bands and good music. When the party finishes the sun is up.

Crazy.
Good stuff.

Femke and Flo, Flo and Femke, F&F, FnF got married. I need to see them someday to give them a big hug. She is one of the nicest belgium ladies, apart from Peter, and he is the swiss Hugh Grant. Yes a romantic comedy that I love to watch again and again. Kisses. Good stuff.

Paella at home

And we had our first paella at home. It was good, very good. And because I was the cook, it was fantastic (irish style fantastic). One day I will do paella like my mother, but I need to practice, and I like the practice because I have to eat it later. One day you will be invited. Get ready it is good stuff.

Yes, I bought it last week, it is fun and works great. When I have to work in a dark place and my hands are busy, I use this and I am the man. Also If you have to change something in the electricity at home, better turn the light off and then work. I saw it a while a go and now I have it. But I am not on the filed now, then I will use it when I go to the toilet or to scare Cristina at home, ji,ji. Good stuff.

Today I recieved a lot of pictures from Rue about Rimini. Nice ones and funny, a nice way to start a morning. My selection is when the whole team took a picture together with one of us in front. Gent, Belgium championships.

I had to spend the weekend in Belgium for work reasons. But for good reasons all my friends were around the area and we had a good time. The Belgium championships were during the weekend here, then everybody was in the same place, easy. I had the chance to see Femkita with the nice belly. And Juliette, Jelle's doughter walking around.

Rimini

And of course Rimini. What can I say about Rimini. Good time with my friends, sun, nice dinners, great parties a lot of stories to tell and a lot of fun.... ah and some frisbee.

Yes, we had golden shirts this year. We do not make things half the way, if we do ridiculous things we do it all the way to the end. no joking. je,je. That was fun. They ended up calling me the golden sausage or the golden condom. yes, funny.

Girona tournament

We also went to Girona to play ultimate, and I met Ana Lucia, Pennie's doughter. She looks fantastic. And my team was so fun that we enjoyed that tournament despite the rain and wind. It was amazind. Thank you all for coming.

calcotada Josep

we organized a nice calcotada at Josep's house. next to the beach with good friends. It was fun. Also Sofia and me learned how to make calcots then anytime you want we can organize a beutifoul calcotada at your house. We are good on this. And also some swiming and alcohol involved. Josep, we will be back.

Last year in Viareggio we had an excelent time. We won the tournament and of course enjoy the relax as usual. This why we play ultimate frisbee, nothing else.

Colegiata de Toro

We also visit the colegiata de Toro. Colegiata is when it is almost a cathedral. This is next to my oncle house.

The curiosity here is one of the entrances is a colorfull arch that you won't see in any other place in earth. And also for sure you will never be able to take pictures, but the chosen ones... ji,ji.
Another nice thing is the pregnant Maria. There are a lot of curious things in that colegiata. And you can enjoy this with the best wine.

In the entrance decoration you can see the whole pasion of Jesus and heaven and hell and everybodyu is there, like a big party. You can spend hours watching this thing. Is like the old ancient comics to tell you what would happen to you if you are a good or a bad guy.

Good stuff.

Plaza de Toros de Toro

In Toro my oncle Mariano who knows everybody because is a really small and nice town, managed to get the old 1800 plaze de toros, bull ring, open for us.
At the moment they are rebuilding it. I can tell you that walking into that place was an amazing feeling... I don't wanna know how it will be with a bull running around there.

My oncle Mariano got married in Toro. It was a great weekend of family, good food, good wine in a nice town.

My family was there at complete and we really enjoy that different weekend in one of the best wine areas in Spain.
